The Apostle Islands regions is about 1 to 2 weeks behind when compared to this time last year. We had a late fall and the salmon ran late and each happened about 1 to 2 weeks later. The Apostle Islands Ice Caves opened last year on January 31st, so this would imply that you can expect them to open some time in February. However, this is just a prediction based on where we are on 11/4/19 compared to last year. If we have a cold beginning to Winter with lots of night time lows below zero, you can expect the ice caves to open sooner than last year. Last year we had a pretty warm start to Winter and in the end of January it started to get real cold. We will just have to see what Winter brings but if you’re looking for an approximate opening date for the Apostle Islands Ice Caves 2020, I would guess it will lie somewhere between January 15th and February 15th. We will certainly keep you updated if you sign up for our ice cave update newsletter on the home page of our website. For now, we are looking forward to the open water ice cave season that will happen in December and will post our exploits in kayaking through sea caves on our facebook page at www.facebook.com/apostleisland.
