Our small boats carry five passengers or fewer, allowing us to explore the open water ice caves at Romans Point while staying close to shore for the entire trip.
We focus our operations on Fridays and Saturdays so that we can reliably reach our four person trip minimum and avoid cancellations due to low participation. Sundays are reserved primarily for rescheduling guests who had their Friday or Saturday tours canceled. We can run Sunday tours when conditions are safe and when the four person minimum is met.
This experience is extremely weather dependent. You should expect a high likelihood of cancellation, often around fifty percent and sometimes closer to seventy percent. We usually know the night before if conditions will allow us to run the tour and if they are not perfect, we cancel for safety.
If we cancel for any reason, including weather, you receive a full refund. If your tour is canceled, we will do everything possible to move you to a Sunday or the next weekend with available space and safe conditions.

Explore the stunning sea caves and growing ice formations along the west side of the Bayfield Peninsula near Romans Point from the unique perspective of driving your own boat. This is a guided tour, but you are the captain. Our experienced naturalist will accompany the group in a separate guide boat or aboard select vessels, offering in depth interpretation of the regions geology, wildlife, and natural history, not to navigate your boat.
How It Works
Each group will be assigned a small easy to operate vessel with a maximum of 6 passengers per boat
You will receive a short orientation on boat handling and safety before launch
Vessels stay close to shore and only operate in calm conditions with waves under 1 foot
The guide provides real time interpretation by radio or from a nearby guide boat
Important Conditions and Safety
This tour does not cross open water and always hugs the shoreline for safety
Tours only run when wave conditions are ideal under one half foot and forecasted to remain calm
All participants must dress appropriately for cold weather and plan for 10 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures
Due to the unpredictable nature of Lake Superior in late fall this tour has a high chance of cancellation
How to Book
Rather than booking a specific date you will sign up for a month long window such as November. We monitor conditions daily and notify participants 48 hours in advance when conditions are favorable.
If you are unable to make it out during the month you booked you may reschedule for another month or receive a 90 percent refund
If we cancel for any reason including weather you will receive a full refund
Cancellations 48 hours or more before your tour receive a 90 percent refund
No shows or same day cancellations receive no refund
