Experience the solitude of the wilderness on the expansive North Country Trail. Choose a weekend or the 100 mile challenge and earn your NCT patch for completing the 100 mile segment. The trail traverses 200 miles of Wisconsin, and we have selected the best sections to spend our time. Carrying our shelter and food and supplies we will camp in the backcountry and enjoy the remoteness of the trail while having the ability to shuttle in and out for the distance the trip requires. Multiple options for equipment include Tent or hammock, available items to include trekking poles and headlamps. We will provide the core items, sleeping bag. hammock or tent, sleeping pad, and a backpack sized for the trip. We will provide a list of items that should be brought including clothing and personal items. This is a great introduction for families looking to get into backpacking or new backpackers interested in learning about ultralight backpacking. It is also a great shakedown hike for a pending thru hike of a long distance trail such as the Appalachian Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail. With an ultralight base weight you will be able to nimbly travel along the trail without a cumbersome heavy backpack while carrying everything you’ll need to enjoy your time in the backcountry. This intermediate trip is designed to get you the skill and confidence to start backpacking on your own. You will pack your own gear and food, you will obtain and filter your own water and learn to cook in the backcountry. We will give you the knowledge to plan a trip and take into account factors that will aid in risk management and rout finding. How to deal with minor medical issues on trail and other basic skills. Your guide Chris has thru hiked the Appalachian trail and PCT using ultralight gear and has plenty of useful and practical tips for planning and executing a successful trip. After working at the 30th mile on the AT at Neels gap and working at the shop doing pack shakedowns we will apply the formula thru hikers use to pack effectively and comfortably to have the right amount of trail comfort and camp comfort. This trip can be fun for more experienced backpackers simply looking to try ultralight gear before committing to the expense of swapping out equipment.
